Local Colour

Teyani posted a photograph of some wildflowers outside her home: “money plants” she called them. We call them “Honesty” here in Scotland. Later in the year, these purple flowers are replaced by transparent seed pods with flat seeds inside – like coins I suppose. And if you are “honest” and leave them in their purses, they fall to the ground in the autumn, ready to pop up again in unexpected places.

This got me thinking about the flowers and plants around me at the moment. The seedlings in my greenhouse are romping away. The gorse is in full bloom and smells amazing – we are surrounded by banks and banks of it and the air is heady with toasted coconut and honey – mmmm! A tulip has popped up from nowhere – I certainly didn’t plant it! And the bluebells are starting to flower.

In the midst of all this colour, I have rediscovered the glowing beauty of the Claudia Handpaint. I am using the wrong pattern to make the most of this yarn, I admit it. I turned the heel, and look what appeared underfoot! Wider stripes of loveliness: a Pharoah’s treasure-trove of turquoise and gold! I should have knitted plain stocking-stitch socks, not fancy schmancy rib-and-cable jobs. Sigh. I like the pattern and I like the wool, but they don’t go together well. But I am not going to frog them. They are, as First Love says “perfectly good”.

My Vogue Knitting magazine has arrived. I am ordering some yarn today. For the dress on the cover. I am insanely excited at the prospect. Can you believe it? I am not sure I can! This will be my first “big” knit in…ooh… about 15 years! I can’t justify using the recommended yarn – it would be over £100 to knit, and this is knitting dangerously, so I am off to research alternatives – maybe something with a bit of bamboo in it?
ETA: Hmmm: Wendy Supreme pure cotton at £14.99 for 1000g or SWTC Bamboo at £8.99 for 100g...? Bamboo comes in the most glorious colour called Purplexed...
