Hospital Update

Just a quick update for FL's fan club ; )

He was back at the hospital for his monthly Haematology appointment today.
Nothing to report re myeloma.  Everything is "normal" in the standard blood test:  white cells, haemoglobin, calcium, potassium - you name it, it is "fine".  However, they haven't done a Freelite test since November, so blood was taken for that today and sent off to Birmingham - results in a month's time.

However...

He admitted to me this morning that his mouth is giving him trouble and has been for about two weeks.  I knew this, because he has been avoiding kissing me!  I ask him every day how he is... and he prevaricates.  But knowing he was going to the hospital today, he gave in and told me the truth - sigh!

In his words:  his dodgy canine tooth is very loose and painful but this is not as bad as the terrible taste and smell he has in his mouth and in his head.  He says it feels like his face and jaw are rotting away.

In my observation:  yes, there is a terrible smell.  Something like stale coffee grounds mixed with mothballs mixed with blocked toilets. The dog and the bin have both been blamed in the last week. Sorry if you have just eaten.

I asked him why he hadn't admitted this earlier, because he could have rung the dental unit at the hospital for an urgent appointment if he needed to?  He just looked shifty and said he thought it could wait til his appointment, which is scheduled for this Friday (27 January).

So today he told his Haematology Doctor about the taste / smell / pain.  She looked confused and rummaged through his file.  It would appear that the Maxillofacial Unit has STILL not written to Haematology to tell them their diagnosis.  The Doctor asked what had been said at the dental appointment.  I explained that they thought he had a mild case of osteonecrosis of the jaw.  The Doctor said: "But osteonecrosis is horrendous!"

Oh. Um.  Awkward moment!

She regathered herself and said she was sure the Maxillofacial Specialist would sort him out on Friday.  But you know when someone's mouth is saying one thing while their eyes are saying something else?  Yeah. That look.

So roll on Friday, I suppose.

Oh dear. Awkward moment indeed. And why do men DO that "I'm alright" thing when they'e not - it always leads to more trouble in the end. (which is not a helpful thing to say, Moira, in the circumstances). Wishing you all the best for Friday. xx

I really truly hope someone, anyone, sorts his issues out. It seems the docs keep dropping the ball. So disheartening.

Keeping y'all in my thoughts!

Why does working one's way through the health care system seem like such a lottery so often? Surely you're due to land on someone who pulls their finger out and gets some action for you. Do hope so.

Prayers for healing come your way from this little corner of the world. And for comfort. And for relief from pain. And from fear. Amen.

I'm going to focus on the woman who left a comment saying she has osteonecrosis and it's manageable; and also I'm remembering that the maxillofacial guy made you feel something could be done. Lots of good thoughts coming your way. Hope Friday's appointment is helpful. x

Hope it goes well on friday - sorry to hear about the consultant's reaction and delay in notes being sent. Much as I hate having to nag people to do their jobs, maybe an angry phone call to the MF people would speed things up.

Worry and fearful waiting.... Can it be made more torturous than it is?
